Top 10 Longest Bridges in the World

Engineers over the last century have given rise to some of the most articulate structures in the World History. Infrastructural Development today has reached its peak, and these humongous bridges that we will be talking about are prime examples of it. Here in this list, we are listing the top 10 longest bridges in the world, which will prove that nothing is unreachable or unthinkable today.

10.Runyang Bridge(35.66 Km)

Runyang Bridge connects the provinces Zhenjiang and Yangzhou in China and crosses the river Yangtze. The bridge is the part of a longer project called the Yangzhou-Liang Expressway. In between the two bridges, there is an island by the name of Shiyezhou. The construction of this bridge started in October 2000 and was completed way ahead of schedule on 2005. The Bridge opened to the general public in October 2005. The total length of the Bridge is 35.66 Km, and the cost of building the bridge was approximate US$700 million. Before the bridge was there in its place, there was a ferry service from Zhenjiang to Yangzhou which was comparatively slow. Today, with the help of the Runyang Bridge, it is only a matter of 40 minutes.


Runyang Bridge today serves thousands of people every day and is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.

9.Hangzhou Bay Bridge(35.68Km)

In position 9, we have the Hangzhou Bay Bridge which is located in China and joins the municipalities of Jiaxing and Ningbo in Zhejiang province. The Hangzhou Bridge was completed in 2007 and was opened for public use in 2008, a year after its completion. The bridge came as a blessing to the people of Ningbo. The distance between Ningbo to Shanghai came down from 400km to 180km. The travel time over this bridge is 2 hours, and the total length of the bridge is approximately 35.68Km. It is one of the longest cables stayed bridge in the world, and it took 11.8 billion yuan to build the Hangzhou Bay Bridge.


8.Yangcun Bridge(35.80Km)

One of the longest bridges in the world which felicitate high speed trains to run over them. The bridge was constructed in favor of Beijing-Tianjin Interstate Railways. With a total length of 35.8Km, the Yangcun Bridge is used for trains which travel at a speed greater than 350Km per hour. The Yangcun bridge was opened in 2007, after ensuring various safety measures. Recorded as the fastest train track of the world, the Yangcun bridge has reduced the travel time from 70 minutes to 30 minutes via this bridge.


7.Manchac Swamp Bridge(36.69Km)

The second longest bridge in the United States of America and holding the position #7 in the top 10 longest bridge, the Manchac Swamp bridge is the second oldest bridge in the list. Opened for public in 1979, it is one of the longest bridge in the water. The Manchac Swamp Bridge is a part of Interstate 55 which goes over Louisiana. With the cost over $7 million per mile, this bridge is known to be the longest toll-free bridge in the world. The longest bridge of its time, it spans an area of 36.69 Km. The total driving time over this bridge has been estimated to 40 mins. The Manchac Swamp Bridge is a Trestle or a pile bridge.


6.Lake Ponchartrain Causeway(38.35Km)

The Lake Ponchartrain Causeway is the sixth largest bridge in the world and the longest one in the US. The oldest one in the list, the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway was built in two parts. While the southern part was built in 1956, the Norther part was built in 1969. The length of the bridge is 38.35 Km. Located in the state of Louisiana the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway is used to cross the Lake Ponchartrain. It is called a causeway rather than a bridge because it consists of two parallel bridges. The proposal for this bridge was given by the government in the early 20th century, but it started late and finished late.


After 47 long years, this bridge is still in the list of longest bridges in the world.

5.Beijing Grand Bridge(48.15Km)

This bridge is also a part of the Chinese Railway. This long railway viaduct is a part of Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. Located in the capital of China, the Beijing Grand bridge was completed in 2010 and was opened for use in 2011, after various demonstrations and test runs. It has bagged the position #5 with a length of 48.15Km. Built for the fast trains running between Beijing and Shanghai, two of the biggest cities of China, this bridge felicitates high-speed trains traveling at 300Km per hour.


4.Bang Na Expressway(55 Km)

The Bang Na Expressway is the longest bridge in Thailand. Locally known as the Buraphi Wit Expressway, this expressway was the longest bridge in the world till 2010 and is one of the engineering spectacle produced by the joint venture of USA and Asia. This expressway is 55 km long and is a 6 lane elevated expressway, which has a width of 27 meters. With two toll plazas along its way, this expressway has a total of 12 lanes and was completed in 2000. A megaproject taken over by some of the best civil engineers in Asia, Europe, and America, this Expressway is a symbol of supremacy.


3.Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge(79.8Km)

At number three, there is the Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge of China. The Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge is a part of the Zhangzhou-Xian high-speed railway. It connects Zhangzhou and Xian. The bridge crosses the Wei river two times in its journey and passes many highways in its path. The bridge was completed in 2008 but was started after several test runs in 2010. The railway line opened in February 2010. It was the longest bridge on completion but then was surpassed in length by the other two bridges in the list. With a total length of 79.8Km, this bridge today serves thousands of passengers who travel by train every day.


2.Tianjin Grand Bridge(113.8Km)

The Tianjin Grand Bridge is also a part of Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The construction of the Tianjin Grand Bridge started on 2006 and was completed in 2010. It was opened for public service in 2011, after a year after its completion, after several demonstrations. The length of this bridge is 113.8 Km and is the first bridge in the world to cross the 100Km mark. Being the second largest railway network of the World, the Chinese Railway made these high-speed bridges in respect to shortening distances between places. The Tianjin Grand Bridge is a type of viaduct bridge.


1.Danyang Kunshan Grand Bridge(164.8 Km)

The construction of the Danyang Kunshan Grand Bridge was started in 2006, which ended in 2010. The bridge was opened for general service on 2011, after taking various safety measures. The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is located on the rail line between Shanghai and Nanjing in the Jiangsu province. The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge holds the Guinness book record for being the longest bridge in the world with a total length of 164.8Km. The cost for making this bridge was approximated as $8.5 billion dollars.
