Top 10 Super Fun things to do on a Rainy Day

Those golden moments of childhood have been lost on no one when, in utmost anticipation, we waited for school to get cancelled on the day of heavy showers. Morning used to greet us with sullen, grey skies threatening to burst open with the weight of centuries; and we used to wait expectantly for the same! How lost we got in gleeful abandon when our prayers were answered with heavy showers! But, for most of us, a rainy day meant a long (and often boring stay at home). True, we escaped the humdrum schedule of the school, but we also missed the craziness and fun. Most of our parents would forbid us from doing anything that would involve us getting wet or anything remotely close. Siblings helped kill boredom to a great extent, but for single children boredom got the better of the initial excitement.

However, there are many activities one can indulge in to get the best out of a rain-washed day. From childish activities to more mature ones (ahem!), there are plenty of ways to keep boredom at bay! How you would like the following ten gems are for you to say!

10. GREAT TIME FOR CATCHING UP ON THOSE SUGGESTED MOVIES

After slogging it out for 9 hours on working days, weekends are generally meant for spending quality time with your near and dear ones- be it your parents, wife, children or girlfriend. To devote time in front of the TV screen or the laptop would be quite selfish! The last thing you would want to hear is your girlfriend or wife scream, “You never give me enough of your time”; or your parents scream, “Wish you were a child again when you couldn’t do without us”. Truth be known, we can’t do without them now either, and we very much love our wives/girlfriends. Thus, rainy days are ideal for movies! You can even have a family screening and enjoy a movie like “Marley and Me” together!

9. HELP YOUR YOUNGER SIBLINGS/KIDS OUT WITH THEIR HOMEWORK

This might not sound great at first, but seriously you wouldn’t want your younger siblings or kids to think you’re incapable of helping them with their burden (at that age, homework is a SORE!! Plus, it really helps the bonding process. Moreover, if your sibling happens to study in the ninth or tenth standard, helping them with their homework will actually help you in several aptitude tests (especially if you are a college student). Upsides to everything, see?! Complete win-win situation!

8. MAKE A MESS IN THE KITCHEN AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

Caution! Make sure you appease your mom/wife enough before trying this at home! If you’re skilled at it, they wouldn’t be sweating it anyway. But if you happen to be a cook ‘par excellence’ as I am (Oh, the sarcasm!) better be on your guard. The mess might end up inside you (long before it gets a chance to become something beautiful)! However, with a little help from them, as they will probably feel the boredom as well, you can surely conjure up a culinary first. And chances are, the process is going to be way more fun than the finished product!

7. GREAT TIME FOR YOU IF YOU’RE A POET/PHOTOGRAPHER

Seriously, the rains outside, a blurry vision of the outside world, a screen of liquid reality…literary-gasm for a person with a creative bent of mind. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea to sit down with a pen and paper and fill it up with poetic-babble, but it is a great source of relaxation and liberation for those who can. Plus, you don’t even need to be the next PB Shelley; if you have a decent camera at hand (these days, your phone does the trick!) a rainy day is a near-ideal time to get to snapping some jaw-dropping, beautiful pictures! The next thing you know, you upload them on Facebook and voila! The ‘likes’ keep pouring in by the minute.

6. SNUGGLE UP WITH THAT SPECIAL PERSON

Works well if you two are the only ones living in the house/apartment, source  of potential embarrassment otherwise! Honestly speaking, there can be few better ways by which you can spend a rainy day. A nice, cosy time under the sheets, talking, getting intimate and playing around (get the drift!) serves to strengthen the relation as well as work as a stress-buster (and I’m not preaching!). What can be even better is if you two can fix up a bubble bath and cosy yourselves in the bath-tub. The imagination itself is exhilarating; you can sure gauge how exciting it’s actually going to be!

5. CATCH UP ON YOUR FAVOURITE BOOKS

For much the same reason as that for movies…catch up on those unfinished gems. However, this is something that you cannot do in a group (PS-personally, I’m not a great fan of reading circles!). For you to keep your attention riveted to a book for at least a couple of hours requires a special day such as this where no one is really going to shout at you for indulging in some alone-time. The dude/dudette needs a break and he/she gets it! Rainy days are great to start books in the genre of thriller, romance and drama!

4. PERFECT TIME FOR HOBBIES

gardening

Rainy days are also among the best to catch up with hobbies. Be it playing an instrument, compiling stamps, photography (as I mentioned earlier). The extremely comforting weather has a significant part to play in dispelling the lethargy and it is up to you to make the most of it. For those with gardening as their hobby, a rainy day will keep them sufficiently busy as they will have their hands full with work- ensure minimal water-logging, make sure the plants get a good deal of water, etc. Also, the rains significantly reduce their work so it’s an added plus!

3. PLAY FUN INDOOR GAMES

You don’t need to be a child for this. Such things, I believe, posses the power to transcend the boundaries set by age. Be it hide-and-seek, or a ‘violent’ pillow fight, or even a casual game of cards there can be few better ways of spending your unexpected holiday! Better still, if you posses a large enough house, design a small obstacle course kind-of thing! It will be an exercise for the mind and body and a delight for your kids/younger siblings. Just make sure not to break too many things along the way! And if you’re too scared of breaking things, call those friends of yours, plan out a multiplayer game (Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, FIFA, Need for Speed) and get them gaming fingers tapping!

2. JUMP AROUND IN THE RAIN CRAZILY JUST FOR GETTING WET

rain wet

Trust me, the amount of fun and pleasure one can derive out of this is astronomical! You’re bound to hear cautionary words from the elders, but pay no heed! Go out, get wet and release yourself under Mother Nature’s bounteous blessings. Splash water on each other (if you have company), dance around, shiver with delight as the drops engulf you and give in to the relentless voice that tells you to drag your elders in as well (but be careful with that!). It is not every day that you will be able to enjoy getting wet so get the most out of it. On other occasions, you would probably be cursing the dark skies for breaking open!

1. GO ON A LONG, ROMANTIC WALK

On any given rainy day, this trumps all the other activities! Admit it, two lovers huddled together under the same umbrella while it is raining cats and dogs is as romantic as it can get! The dirty water circling your feet, the ignorant cars splashing water all over, the occasional ups and downs in the road (literally!) are all secondary as long as you have her/him by your side. And it is even better if you happen to live in a quite neighborhood where  the only thing that can cause any discomfort is a strong wind (blowing away the umbrella!).

For me, a person hailing from Calcutta, such days are quite common during the monsoon (which is quite a significant season here) where it rains in torrents! The accompanying gale, together with the occasional rumbling of the skies seem to add an extra flavor to this divine set-up. However, in all the fun and frolic, do not forget the safety norms- avoid trees, disconnect heavy electrical appliances, shut down active antennae and watch out for stray electric wires on the road. That taken care of, happy getting wet!
