The English Mastiff is of the working dog breed variety. English mastiffs personify the phrase “gentle giants”. They are very affectionate and family friendly. 2. SAINT BERNARD

They were originally bred as guard dogs. Old South African farmers tell tales of the strength and agility of the Boerboel. Size Details- The Bully Kutta can be about 35 inches (90 cm) tall and can weigh as much as 210 pounds (95 kg).
Also known as the Pakistani Mastiff, it was originally bred as a guard dog. They are very docile and family friendly, in addition to being playful. They are also vigilant and protective.

5. GEORGIAN SHEPHERD DOG

They were originally bred as a working breed in Ancient Georgia. Historically, these dogs have been used to save sheep from predators in the field. 6. PYRENEAN MASTIFF

Size Details- Male dog grows up to 77 cm (30 in) and females can grow upto 71 cm (28 in) to 81 cm (32 in). The average weight is about 81 kilograms (179 lb), although males can often weigh over 100 kilograms (220 lb).
The Pyrenean Mastiff is of the working dog breed variety. They are strong and powerful, but equally calm and self reliant. 7. GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG

Size Details- Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs stand at a height of almost 30 inches (76 cm), and weigh 150 pounds (72 kg).
Originally bred for farm duties, they are very active and willing workers. They have a natural liking and propensity towards humans, and are very sociable creatures. High on intelligence, they are enthusiastic, vigilant and faithful.

8. TOSA INU
Place of Origin- Japan

The Great Dane was originally bred as a working dog. They are undisputedly the tallest of dog breeds. In fact, the record for ‘tallest dog’ is held by Zeus, a Great Dane that was 112 cm (44 inches) tall. Great Danes are highly obedient and responsive to training, but they are not timid. The Caucasian Shepherd dog is of the guardian dog breed variety, with a This breed is largely steady, even tempered, and very gentle and interactive with family members. They were originally bred by the nomadic cultures of Tibet to be working and guardian dogs. By temperament, Tibetan Mastiffs are strong willed and protective. They are fiercely loyal, since they are natural guardians. Considerate and brave, Tibetan Mastiffs have a very keen understanding. They are very strong, and extremely aggressive towards threats could be wild toward strangers.
Appearance-They have a thick and luscious coat to protect them from the biting cold; this coat comes in Blue Gray, Black, Brown, Black & Tan, Red Gold, Brown and Tan colours.
Place of Origin- Western Turkey
Size Details- Leaner and taller than other livestock guardian breeds from Turkey, The Akbash typically weighs from 75 to 140 pounds (34 to 64 kg) and ranges from about 27 to 34 inches (69 to 86 cm) in height.
Bred primarily as a livestock guardian, and shepherd dog. They are calm, quiet and steady. Their protective instincts are very visible from a very early age, though they grow up to be more mature and balanced. Akbash dogs are very loyal and affectionate towards their family, and tend not to interact with strangers. They are mostly independent, but are shown to be responsive to basic training, and must be properly socialised.

19. AMERICAN AKITA

American Akita’s are of the working dog breed variety. The american version of the Japanese Akita, is markedly different from the original. 20 ARMENIAN GAMPR DOG
Place of Origin-Armenia
Size Details – Male dog is 65 centimetres (26 in) or more in height, and in female dog is 62 centimetres (24 in) or more in height. Weight corresponds to the total size of the dog, and usually varies from 45 to 60 kilograms (99 to 132 lb).
They were originally bred as livestock guardian dogs. The word “gampr”, means ‘watchdog’, and they are great at doing just that. They are trustworthy and loyal when it comes to the defence of their flock and family, and have a very strong self preservation instinct. They are highly independent, possess a sharp mind and are almost exclusively friendly to human beings. Armenian Gampr Dogs that live in families, consider themselves as a part of the ‘pack’ of humans, and thus are especially attached to them.
Appearance- Depending upon the coat length, there are two types: long-haired, with long top hairs, and short-haired, with dense, relatively short hair. This coat can come in any colour.
21. RUSSIAN BLACK TERRIER
Place of Origin- Russia
Size Details- Female Russian Black Terriers are about 25–28 inches (64–70 cm) in height and 36.3–59 kg in weight; while males are 26–28 inches (66–72 cm) in height and 45.4–68 kg.
Originally bred as military/working dogs; and owing to that original role, these dogs are self assured and confident, and very responsive to training. They can either be very shy or very excitable by nature, and are generally aloof to strangers. 22. BULL MASTIFF

They were originally bred by English wardens or gamekeepers, to guard estates or assist with the hunt. This is why this breed earned the nickname “Gamekeeper’s Night Dog.”
Intimidating and hard looking in appearance, these dogs are actually very sensitive creatures. They have a tendency to be very independent, and hence need effective leaders to follow, for them to be well behaved pets. Strong willed in temperament, their training style is unique, because they do not like to repeat the same activities again and again. 23. ESTRELA MOUNTAIN DOG

These dogs were originally bred to guard herds and homesteads. Estrela’s are large and athletic, and a definite threat to predators and potential opponents. Calm, but fearless, they are ready to face any danger that may arise. They must be socialised at puppyhood, so that they can accept new situations more readily. It is however faithful, affectionate and generous towards the family members they trust, and instinctively attached and protective of children.
Appearance- Their coat comes in two types- long type and short type, and comes in colours of Fawn, wolf gray and yellow, with or without brindling, white markings or shadings of black throughout the coat.
Place of Origin-Turkey
Size Details- They boast a height of 30 to 32 inches (76 to 81 cm) and a weight of up to 145 pounds (66 kg) for males; and 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) with a weight of up to 120 pounds (54 kg) for females.
The Kangal originated as a livestock guarding breed. This dog is not as heavy as it’s other mastiff cousins, and thus is very fast and agile on its feet. Kangals are very protective dogs, who must be properly socialised as puppies if they are to grow up to be friendly to a variety of people. Although they are intelligent and powerful, they manage to stay calm and controlled, and are vigilant of the unfamiliar.

Doubling as a working and guardian dog, The Komondor is considered to be a Hungarian national treasure. Very loyal and territorial of its family, and is hesitant to interact with strangers. Brave and vigilant, Komondors selflessly perform their guardian duties and run to fight threats. Originally meant to be sheepdogs, they are extremely vigilant of the family and the herd.
Appearance-The Komondor is often referred to as “mop dog” because of its long and corded, rope-like coat, which only comes in the colour white, .
26. PERRO DE PRESA CANARIO
Place of Origin- Canary Islands (Spain)
Size Details- The female is 56–61 cm tall, and weighs 37.5–50 kg, while the male is 60–65 cm tall, and weighs 49.9–59 kg.
They double as guardian dogs and working dogs. Presa’s can be aggressive towards strangers, and hostile to unfamiliar dogs. They are agile, powerful, fearless and strong, and thus, are perhaps the best watchdogs. Early obedience training and socialisation is a must for this breed, to curb its natural aggression. It is loyal to a fault, if it finds an effective and powerful master.
Appearance- The coat is short with no undercoating and slightly coarse to the touch. The coat comes in all shades of Fawn and Brindle.

Size Details- Males typically weigh 50–60 kg (110–130 lb) and are 61–69 cm (24–27 in), tall; while the females typically weigh 35–48 kg (77–106 lb) and are 56–63 cm (22–25 in) tall.
They were originally bred to herd livestock and pull carts to the market. Their original role as working dogs, means that they are very willing and eager workers, and are exceedingly active and athletic. Appearance- The coat consists of an outer coat and an undercoat. The outer coat is of medium length, coarse, dense and flat. A Rottweiler is always black with well-defined mahogany with rust-colored markings.
28. AMERICAN BULL DOG
Place of Origin- United States of America
Size Details- They typically weigh between 39-59kgs (85–130 lbs). The females are 20–24 inches tall, whiles males are around 20–26 inches tall.
