Most women have experienced yeast infection at one time or another. The itching, burning sensation and the discharge can make anyone go real mad. Yeast infection, otherwise commonly known as Vaginitis, is caused due to the presence of a particular type of fungus going by the name of Candida Albicans.
While yeast infection are more commonly found amongst women, reports of yeast infection affected men are also increasing in number these days. You must wonder then, that if the infection is so common, then how should we treat ourselves if we are down with it. Let us take a look at some home remedies that will help you get rid of the infection.
- Make sure it is yeast infection
Yes, you heard me. You might think- “This is not a cure or a home remedy. What is it doing on this list?” But the first step towards a successful home remedy treatment is to understand what you are suffering from. Most women cannot differentiate between a yeast infection and a vaginal bacterial infection. The latter can only be cured by prescription drugs and is more serious than yeast infection. Vaginal discharge with a fishy smell but without pain is more commonly associated with vaginal bacterial infection, while itching and discharge with a “baked bread” odor is more commonly associated with yeast infection. It is important to understand the disease first before going in for the remedies.
- Use Yogurt
A certain type of bacteria found in the yogurt called Lactobacillus acidophilus is known to contain the growth of the yeast infection fungus. Make sure the yogurt is plain and unsweetened. Both external application and the introduction of yogurt in your diet will do the trick. You could apply the yogurt on the affected area and leave it for 20 minutes or even overnight. Otherwise, tampons could be dipped in yogurt and inserted into the vagina for two hours, twice a day. Yogurt will give you instant relief from the itching and burning sensations.
- Cranberry fruit juice
Although cranberries have been a hit among the bladder patients, it has also proven to be of great help to those suffering from yeast infection. Cranberry juice corrects the pH levels of urine and the vaginal discharges and in this process, successfully contains the growth of fungi. In a way, you could see this as a flushing-out process for the yeast. Again, the plain and unsweetened version of the juice should be chosen. This is suggested because if sugar is present, there is no better feeding ground for the fungi. Cranberries can also be eaten in their fruit form or even as pills, available I leading drug stores.
- Coconut oil
Just as in the case of yogurt, coconut oil is also said to contain anti-fungal properties and helps in reducing the fungal growth. External application is suggested by many doctors and practitioners, but oral thrushing can also be effective. Apply coconut oil on the affected area thrice a day for quick results. Research also has confirmed that mixing the coconut oil with cinnamon oil will speed the healing process even more. If oral is the way you want to go, then swirl the oil in your mouth for not more than 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure you do not swallow the oil and do this thrice every day.
Garlic is considered a wonder herb, known to be the go-to medicine for many illnesses. It’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and medicinal properties come in handy with yeast infections too. The preferred method is to make a paste out of three or four cloves of garlic and applying on the affected area. If cloves are not available, you could also mix garlic in Vitamin E oil and coconut oil for applying. Eating garlic cloves are a proven and faster method too. But eating cloves of garlic could leave you with a bad breath. But that is a sacrifice I am sure you would not hesitate to make!
- Avoid chemicals and hygiene products
Now this seems to be the impossible. Our body comes in contact with tens of chemical products each day. These are proven to be harsh on the human skin. These chemicals also fluctuate the pH levels in our body and also in the vaginal area and causes yeast infections to flourish. Avoid such products till the itching and scratching have disappeared. Cleaning of the vaginal area should only be carried out using organic means, like mentioned above.
- Boric Acid
An exception to point number 6, the boric acid has saved many from yeast infections. It is gifted with anti-fungal properties and also has mild anti-septic properties. But if you are pregnant, steer miles clear of this remedy. Boric acid has not been studied on pregnant women and many believe that such acids could cause deformities in the child. Externally apply a diluted boric acid solution on the affected area and leave it for a few minutes before thoroughly washing it off. Make sure you clean the area properly and make this a routine daily for two weeks. If you are a regular sufferer of the yeast infection, then you could also ask your physician for boric acid tablets.
- Olive leaves
Olive oil and the olive fruit have made their name in the culinary industry. But the leaves are also a hit. Filled with antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, the olive leaves are a boon to the at-home medic. To make first grade olive oil extract, finely chop the leaves and put it in a jar with a lid. Pour vodka in it till the leaves are submerged and tightly seal the lid and store the jar for four weeks in a dark room. Strain the solution out into a fresh jar. Apply this solution three times a day for best results.
- Go herbal
Head to the kitchen and you will find your solution there. Find basil leaves or Rosemary and you are good to go. Basil tea can be gargled for relief. Boil water and let it boil to a nice, hot temperature. After removing from the heat, mix nicely grounded basil leaves and let it be. After about ten minutes, gargle with the basil tea you prepared. If you have a thing for Rosemary instead, carry out the above mentioned procedure to make a cup of warm Rosemary tea and use it as a douche or a dab over the affected area. You can also do the same with Thyme leaves. Drink up to 3-4 times a day.
- Prevention is better than cure
If you don’t have the disease, you don’t have to take these headaches. Make sure you follow excellent hygiene techniques. Wear cotton underwear at all times. If you are taking birth pills, make sure they do not contain high doses of estrogen. Introduce probiotics into your diet and make sure you follow a healthy diet. Sound sleep and less stress also can contribute in keeping you away from this irritating disease.
